Oudolf
I’m not sure if Piet Oudolfs’ work should be described as Garden or Landscape or Meadow or Prairie or Field or maybe they are simply all of these things. However the work is described, Oudolf has somehow managed to walk all of these forms with seeming ease. Oudolfs’ designs celebrate the beautiful order and chaos of nature, using the humble plant as the core weapon in his armoury of landscape design.
Squid Squash
To create a TV show centred round a dystopian game show that kills off most of its main characters, all you need is green tracksuits, hot pink jumpsuits, black face masks, a giant girl doll, honeycomb biscuits, repeating staircases and blood. Lots of it. Full of iconic moments, Squid Game is claustrophobic, gruesome, dark and evil, but it somehow squeezes in hope. I’m still not sure how.
M83
10 Years. Its 10 years since the release of the M83 album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, so of course we must celebrate. I am a late comer to M83, l’m embarrassed to say. My connection came to M83 via the movie Warm Bodies. A little trance, a little abrasive and little apocalyptic, M83 is a perfect choice for a film about a different world.
Neues Museum
Of course there is no one favourite at Globescope but some are more favourite than others. David Chipperfield is one of those ‘more favourites’. But this story isn’t about David Chipperfield Architects but rather their once in a century, beautiful museum project in Berlin, the Neues Museum.
Warm Bodies
I like Zombie movies. Done. Yeah, yeah, yeah, l’ve heard all the criticism before so don’t bother arguing with me. A good Zombie flick is a little (or a lot) on the edge, not quite a Horror film. For some reason, Horror freaks me out but a Zombie film is the right balance of Suspense, Drama, Fantasy and in the case of Warm Bodies, Romance. Oooohhh, the Holy Grain; Romance and Zombies.
Channel Orange
I want to write about Channel Orange by Frank Ocean and would like to write about it without using the word “love” or “awesome” or “amazing”. Not because these aren’t appropriate words for this album but they feel a little immature or not appropriately cool for such an album.
SANAA
Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, a reflective stream. Rolex Learning Centre, a rolling landscape. New Museum, stacked mesh cubes. Moriyama house, a courtyard village. Japanese architects SANAA somehow manage to package complex ideas and distil them into an elegant outcome that walks that fine line between sculpture, architecture and play….and they make it look easy.
Twinkle Twinkle
With Covid lock down time on my hands and now having watched a few Korean films and TV series, l thought l’d share some of those actors that have immediately struck a chord with this novice Korean film and TV fan.
Indoor Fins - Antidote
I really just wanted to share this music with you; its no more complicated than that. Antidote by Indoor Fins rolls joyfully and seems like an effortless flow of energy that bounces between dance, groove and anthem.
Pas Normal Studios
Some people are just cool. It’s effortless. Pas Normal Studios is the cool kid. Unlike the cool kid, Pas Normal Studios has good reason to be happy with themselves, because they are confident, handsomely modern and don’t care what other people think.
My Mister
She crushed a ladybug. This scene set the tone for the following episodes of My Mister, the 2018 tvN Korean drama series created by Studio Dragon (airing on Netlfix). New to Korean TV, l have just stumbled on My Mister and in equal parts, scarred and full of admiration for the shows ensemble cast and their stories.
Hocker Stool
I’ll be honest the Hocker stool is one of my favourite pieces of furniture. But that sounds a little limiting because l think its a beautiful object. Yes, you can sit on it or use it as side table but best of all , its just beautiful to look at .
MKM Museum Kuppersmulhe
I know, I know, its not a competition. Its not about who’s the best, but…. Swiss architecture firm HDM (Herzog & de Meuron) have created another beautiful project that reinforces what an amazing design practice they are and have been, since being established in 1978 (by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron).
Park Hye Jin - Before I Die.
Feeling like l wanted to listen to something a little different, l randomly searched iTunes and luckily landed on Park Hye Jin’s album Before I Die. Listed by iTunes as Electronic, l think this is one of those albums that blends a range of music typologies into an ambitious collection with edge that l liked.
