Hocker Stool

I will be honest, the Hocker stool is one of my favourite pieces of furniture. But that sounds a little limiting because l think it is also a beautiful object. Yes, you can sit on it or use it as side table but best of all, its just beautiful to look at.

Hocker Stool, by Herzog & de Meuron, for Vitra.

Designed in 2003 by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and sold through Vitra internationally, the Hocker stool is reminiscent of other stools yet completely different. The most comparable piece must be the Eames Walnut stool (range). A little like a chess piece, the Walnut stool is one of the most iconic furniture forms (particularly in silhouette) that exists today. Most impressively, the Hocker has managed to maintain that history. The Hocker silhouette defines its character. Simple and with authentic weight, the Hocker is a piece you can own have forever; quietly and modestly holding its place in any lounge.

As outlined on the HDM website “The Hocker started from a conversation on wood techniques and how to take away material from a solid block of wood by means of turning. Its final shape is defined by three basic lathe operations.” Made from solid birch, the Hocker walks the fine line of a nod to the past whilst maintaining that edge that the very furniture piece have.
